The controversial Muslim community center in NYC has spurred a nationwide debate. It is unbelievable that many Americans are falling into this "Islamaphobia" craze. This country was founded on a basis of religious freedom. America is known as the "world of the free." Yet, the recent acts of Americans are proving otherwise to the rest of the world.
Should African Americans be anti-Christian because the KKK members are Christians? No. Because, like a college logic statement, while KKK members are Christians, all Christians are not KKK members. Likewise, the terrorists that hijacked the planes on 9/11 were Muslim, but all Muslims are not terrorists.
It's a shame that a Gainesville, Florida church is organizing the burning of the Quran. Along the same comparison as before, how would they feel if African Americans organized a Bible-burning event. It is a senseless and ignorant act. Protests of this planned Quran-burning are being held outside US Embassies, and this could cause problems for our men and women serving our country oversees in Islamic countries.
And on that note, let's not forget that some of the men and women serving our country are Muslim. What are we telling our soldiers, Marines, sailors, and airmen of the Muslim faith? We might as well slap these brave Americans across the face and tell them that their services and bravery are not appreciated by their own country. How ignorant is that??
Americans come in all shapes, sizes, colors, sexual preferences, financial backgrounds, and most importantly in this debate - all religions. Jews, Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Wiccans, Agnostics, Atheists, etc. - we all live, work, and socialize together. And since the early days of the colonies, Muslims have been a part of this country - living, working, and socializing along side everyone else.
Americans need to take a stand against terrorists. Not Muslims. We need to take a stand against terrorism, not a single religion. We need to take a stand against evil, not our neighbors.
